LETTRE D'AMOUR A UN HOMME ARABE

Zoulikha Bouabdellah - Solo Show
Associate Curator: Christophe Langlitz

« Lettre d'amour à un homme arabe » is the tittle that Zoulikha Bouabdellah chose for her first solo exhibition in the gallery Mathias Coullaud.

One more time, the artist depicts her obssesions ; the place of women, freedom, desire, love, men, the commitment that these principles require to a young muslim woman.

Those who will want to seize this manifest-tittle to make it a polemic object, of denonciation of islam will make a mistake. Because, by enlarging the line to make it readable, we can say that Bouabdellah wonders : does the woman have the freedom of her desire ? Does the male, social and religious censorship in all the societies repress the simple feminine pulse? What desire for the woman? What freedom to use it ?
The transgression, prerogative of the artist, become the engine of her artistic approch, but with all the women's subtility, playing with her fineries and attributes, questioning at the same time the history and the tradition.

Here, Zoulikha Bouabdellah propose a serie of lace drawings in china ink, quoting the parabole « Joseph and the Potiphar's wife », extracted from the Genesis : « Once that Joseph entered in the house to do his service, without anybody in it, she took him by his clothing and says : « Come to bed with me ! ». But he left his clothing in her hand et ran away ». Immortalized by Rembrandt and other artists, stigmatized by the Church, the Joseph's wife that tradition denied the name – her name was ZOULEIKHA – represent the horror and impossibility of woman desire, its diabolic aspect, “a burning heart by lechery”, to quote Calvin.

Zoulikha Bouabdellah's art is here, with all her drawings : she uses a biblic quoting and judeo-christian to show us that this negation transcends all our cultures. She asks, like always, art history and of the representation like vectors and agents of myths and unconscious of our societies. The technic she uses, china ink, the treatment of lace, highlights the fact that it's a woman who's speaking !

Actually, the surprising movie-installation named “Les Hommes de la plage” ( Beach's Men ), men, young men with muscular bodies and rippling muscles are playing in front of us a carnal choregraphy. This long monotonous chant of image places us at the core of our contemporary world, in the center of an essential fight, the woman's look, her full and whole place. This look of love for these men, simple and direct desire : assume freely her desire, for a woman, maybe is the parabole of the most essential fight of our time !
